There's a rumor that it took Leonardo Da Vinci ten years to paint the lips... Hmmm...

Joke of the Week

While sports fishing off the Florida coast, a tourist capsized his boat. He could swim, but his fear of alligators kept him clinging to the overturned craft. Spotting an old beachcomber standing on the shore, the tourist shouted, "Are there any gators around here?"

"Naw," the man hollered back, "they ain't been around for years!"

Feeling safe, the tourist started swimming leisurely toward the shore. About halfway there he asked the guy, "How'd you get rid of the gators?"

"We didn't do nothin'," the beachcomber said.

"Really?" said the tourist.

The beachcomber added, "The sharks got 'em."

Trivia of the Week

This week's trivia: What is the longest word that can be made using the letters from only ONE row of the standard American keyboard?

And the anser is... TYPEWRITER. How odd... Unfortunately, nobody guessed this one, so I'm going to have to save those wonderful prizes for next week.

This week's trivia: What is the only bird that can fly backwards?

If you think you know, please email me! Even if you don't think you know and you just have a guess, please email me! The answer will be posted next week.

Fun Add-On of the Week

This was just a fun thing that I got, and I thought I'd share it with all of you.

Your Age By Chocolate.

First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate. (More than once but less than 10)

2. Multiply this number by 2 (Just to be bold)

3. Add 5. (for Sunday)

4. Multiply it by 50. I'll wait while you get the calculator...

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1754... If you haven't, add 1753 ...

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number .....

The first digit of this was your original number (i.e., how many times you want to have chocolate each week).

The next two numbers are ...

YOUR AGE! Pretty neat, huh?

I'd like to give special thanks to Bob Saar for this hypothesis:

Landon, thanks for sending me "age by chocolate"

You wondered how it works, so did I, so I worked that out and am putting it in my newspaper column this week. here's the solution:

It's in two parts: steps 1, 2, 3 and 4 create the first digit. Steps 3 and 4 create the number 250, which is added to 1754 to give the year 2004

Using X as the number of times in a week, the steps give this:

1. X
2. 2X
3. 2X + 5
4. 100X + 250

Do you see that? You can test it: If X = 1 then step 4 gives us 350. If X = 9 then step four gives us 1150. And so on. Agreed? (It's a rule of math).

Now, the trick: 100X is the same as saying X00, yes? If X=1, then we've got 100. If X=9 then we've got 900, yes?

So, we're going to do step five a little differently:
5. 100X + 250 + 1754 = 2004 + 100X
6. (2004 + 100X)-2000 = 4 + 100X (for someone born in 2000, to make this easy to see)

So, the result in step six can be written as X00 + 4 or X04, where X is a single digit picked in step 1.
So, the first digit will always be X, because we'll always have a two-digit number added to a three-digit number that is divisible by 100 (it has two zeros on it).

Got it?

Ahhh, but what happens if someone was born in 1904 or earlier, and is at least 100 years old?

And, this will work next year if you do what to change it? (Anyone who has an idea, think of this as a second piece of trivia. Email me if you have a guess.)
